United Nations Secretariat: Archive and Records Management (1 hour; 1 credit)

The talk will open with a brief introduction to the UN Archives and Records Management section and recordkeeping issues that arise when working for the United Nations rather than in a national context.  This will be followed by an overview of the ARMS' work within the peace operations, first a summary of the archives in ARMS' custody, then a look at the landmark review of peacekeeping in 2000 and its huge impact on ARMS.  We'll move quickly onto today's field operations information management environment: its technologies, people, and the international political decisions that have direct consequences on UN recordkeeping.  Finally, a look at how ARMS' is handling the 'deluge' of digital archives coming its way.

Presented by Bridget Sisk, Chief of the Archives and Records Management Section (ARMS) for the United Nations Secretariat.

Bridget Sisk has held her current position for the last 12 years.  She joined ARMS 20 years ago as a junior archivist and went on to head up and develop the Section's records management program and advisory services before being appointed Chief.  Bridget obtained a Master's degree in Public History and Archival Studies from the University of Massachusetts in 1986, after which she worked in the photo archives of the Getty Center in California prior to moving to New York to take up a position at the History Center of the American Institute of Physics.  Bridget's recent work has often been focused on information management in peace operations, and prior to that preparing for the winding down and archives management of the International Criminal Tribunals for Rwanda and the Former Yugoslavia.  Bridget has been active in the International Council on Archive's Section of Archivist of International Organizations.
