Xtreme Reference - October 21, 2010

We all know that people stay up at night thinking of questions to ask us — or so it seems some days. Reference inquiries and research questions are always in the queue, and the “who?” “what?” “where?” “when?” and “how?” of handling reference and research is a core consideration of our libraries and information services.  But who can keep up with all the latest approaches and technology? Yikes!

Xtreme Reference has you covered! Go ahead. Take your vacation this summer and when you return, on October 21st, you’ll be ready to learn how to:

- Migrate from the “reference-as-location” to “reference-as-activity” perspective

- Use browser widgets and plug-ins for information access

- Enhance customer learning experiences with on-demand interfaces

- Build a mobile site with low infrastructure cost

- And more . . .

Take your vacation and plan to invest 8 hours to expand your knowledge of the latest research and reference resources, products and skills to benefit your customers and build your network of colleagues and vendors.

Early Bird registration rates are now in effect. (Take a vacation and save money too!…:-) Learn more about the program at: http://units.sla.org/chapter/cmd/xreference.htm

9/20/2010 - A Cubic Foot of Storage is Worth a Thousand Images

For more than thirty-five years, the comment “it’s cheaper to microfilm/scan inactive records than it is to store the paper” has been hurled at records managers, storage vendors, conversion service bureaus, and others.

This session examines that proposition by “crunching the numbers”.

Audience members are invited to bring their own numbers for comparison.

A lively discussion is anticipated.

September 11, 2008 Chapter Meeting Review

With a combination of new and familiar faces, our first monthly Chapter Meeting for the 2008-2009 Season convened at an exciting new venue, the Midtown Executive Club.  In rooms that the British would describe as “neat” (meaning cozy), we accomplished a full agenda and, an educational session.  At the start, greetings, salutations and a moment of silence for the fallen heroes of 9/11 led by our new Chapter President, Melissa Dederer.  Next, introductions of our new Board, a community service appeal from Team Captain, Frank La Sorsa; the RIM Riders will BikeNYC on Oct. 5th to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, (please remember to give) then food, glorious food.

Our special guests for the evening were actually Chapter Members who had been Chapter members for more than 30 and 35 years, respectively, and our Vendors, whose unwavering support over the past year was greatly acknowledged by immediate Past President, Marcel Rodriguez.  By way of announcements, our next CRM Workshop will be Sept. 23 & 24th.  ARMA Vegas approaches and a free guest ticket was raffled to IDC Kahn’s 9/17 Event.  To further build Chapter funds, an iPod Mini was also raffled, with additional raffle opportunities promised throughout the year.  ‘ Honored Member of the Year ‘ was awarded to Chapter WebMistress and Newsletter Maven, Maria Richardson for her years of service.  And Chapter ‘ Member of the Year ‘ was awarded to Crystal Cutler for her energy and commitment to Chapter initiatives.  A special plaque was awarded to Northeast Region Coordinator, Steve Lastres, for his tireless efforts and leadership, especially throughout the June 2008  Northeast Leadership Conference in Saratoga Springs, NY.

Our educational presenter, Paul Lippe in his presentation entitled, “Ramp Up Your Records Program with Enterprise 2.0,” outlined how sophisticated folks are using collaboration technologies to improve productivity for lawyers, legal departments, Records Managers, Librarians and Compliance Officers.  Former General Counsel and Founder of Legal OnRamp, Lippe said, “the world of clients is changing fast, we have to change quickly to adapt.”  Legal OnRamp is where lawyers collaborate, hold peer-to-peer discussions and share resources.  Also, Web 2.0 will replace email.  Managing information here, as well as in social networks like MySpace, Facebook and LinkedIn, will be a challenge.  When asked, “what then, is a record?”  Lippe used Barack Obama’s now famous reply, “that’s above my pay grade” and closed with an invite for attendees to post their questions on Legal OnRamp for a number of folks to answer.

The only drawback?  Not all of our 337 Chapter Members were there!  So here’s hoping we see everyone at the Oct. 7th meeting.  And please, register in advance so that ample food and space can be provided for all.

November 12, 2008 Chapter Meeting Review

Topic: Digital Trends  Speaker: Alan A. Andolsen, CRM, CMC

The growth of digital information has been staggering. Even though paper records and other analog media continues a steady linear increase, digital information doubles in size every four years. Some in our industry have perceived this growth in digital information as a direct threat to the long-term viability of the industry. Others see it as a spectacular business opportunity and have already begun investing in the technology and human resources necessary to apitalize on digital information growth.

Our third Chapter Meeting of the 2008-2009 Season began with the reading of a Thank You letter from the AIEF (ARMA International Educational Foundation).
In appreciation for Metro NYC’s Grant award that funded a research project undertaken by Virginia Jones, CRM, FAI, Metro NYC was widely recognized both
here at home and at ARMA, Las Vegas.  In addition, Chapter President Melissa Dederer, reported that the Study produced was timely and well prepared.
“Metro truly got its money’s worth,” she added.  Members were encouraged to visit www.armaedfoundation.org, download and read the Study entitled,
“USA Federal Requirements for Personal Information Protection.”

Arlene Bronstein was honored for her years of Membership and Records Management service as she retired from the RIM profession.Chapter President, Melissa G. Dederer, CRM, presented Arlene with a
Certificate of Merit and a lovely crystal bowl from Tiffany’s.

Recognition also went to NY’s own, NY Life Insurance Company, who was the first-ever recipient of ARMA International’s Cobalt Award.
Mark Kamien addressed the Membership on behalf of the evening’s Sponsor, InfoCurrent.
VP-Chapter Membership, Lauren Barnes, addressed the Membership on behalf of a noteworthy Community Service event; Launch of the “Just tell.org” website
and youth Step Team.  Written by kids, in kid’s language, “Just Tell.org” helps sexually abused kids and teens learn how to choose an adult to trust
and tell about their abuse.  Donations of $25.00 were common for this event however, donations of any amount continue to be welcomed.
Visit www.justtell.org or call 1-800-4-A-Child.

Chapter Executive Vice-President, Crystal Cutler received the Chapter Member of the Year Award on behalf of  Metro NYC and ARMA International.
Then, desserts and the commencement of our Educational segment, “Digital Information Trends.”  Presenter Alan Andolsen, CRM, CMC, is President of
both Naremco Services and the ICRM and a 35+-year Member of our Metro NYC Chapter.

A captivating presentation that highlighted the abounding opportunities resident in the exponential growth of digital information; Alan reminded everyone that the challenge continues to be, how to manage it all?  We’ll have to know where the Digital Information lives and when needed, how to get it all back.
As we embrace Web 2.0, we must ask, what about Web 3.0? How do we deal with Cloud Computing, E-Ink, Holography, Electronic Ink, RFID Powder and the Human Body as Network.
Will the definition of a document change as a result of these new technologies. What will the evolution of Records Management look like in 5 or ten years? Will we be ready?
However, President Andolsen admonished Members, “Don’t get blindsided by these emerging technologies, learn a bit more.”

As President of the ICRM, Alan encouraged the membership to pursue their CRM certifications.  In addition to the knowledge gained, CRMs earn 35 - 40% more than non-certified Records Managers.
At the closing, one attendee mused, “Al, is that really you up there presenting to us tonight or a hologram?”  To which Alan replied, “Beam me up, Scotty.”

By way of announcements, there will not be a December meeting this year.  The January 13th Meeting and the February 11th All-day Seminar at the NYC Conference Center will both be posted on our website.  Visit often for updated information.  Each promises to be invaluable.  Plan now to attend.
