    Keynote speaker: joe mckendrick

    Joe McKendrick is an independent industry analyst, editor, and author in organizational and technology innovation. He is a regular contributor to Forbes, as well as Database Trends & Applications. Much of his research work is in conjunction with Forbes Insights and Unisphere Research/ Information Today, Inc., covering topics such as big data analytics, database as a service, cloud computing, digital transformation, and enterprise mobility. 

    Joe is also is a regular contributor to CBS interactive, authoring the ZDNet "Service Oriented" site, and is a co-author of the SOA Manifesto, which outlines the values and guiding principles of service orientation in business and IT. 

    He also is co-editor and co-author of a recent book, of Data Analytics in the News Industry, which explores innovations and emerging practices being implemented within the journalism professional and publishing industry.

    In a previous life, Joe served as communications and research director of the Administrative Management Society (AMS), an international professional association dedicated to advancing knowledge within the IT and business management fields. He is a graduate of Temple University.


     

    Steven C. Bennett's practice at Park Jensen Bennett LLP (New York City) focuses on complex domestic and international commercial litigation and arbitration, including bankruptcy, construction, corporate governance, data security, energy, privacy, real estate and other matters. Mr. Bennett gained extensive trial experience during six years at the Office of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, where he served as Chief of the Tax and Bankruptcy Unit, and nearly twenty years as a partner in a major international law firm.


     

    Jennifer Best, J.D. is a Corporate Vice President at New York Life Insurance Company where she has worked for over sixteen years. She began her career as a litigation attorney, which ultimately led to a career working in compliance. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a Juris Doctor degree from Rutgers School of Law.


     

    Steven Coates, IGP, is a Senior Manager on the Strategic Projects and Governance Team in PwC’s Chief Data Office, focusing on driving changes and improvements in data related operations to enhance the use of data and information across PwC. Steven has recently been focused on the technical component workstream for various CDO projects, documenting the functional and technical requirements for business issues or problems to-be solved, and identifying, evaluating, and selecting technology solutions to meet PwC’s business needs. Steven is a certified Information Governance Professional, and a member of the Boston ARMA chapter, and has facilitated an education program at ARMA International.


     

    Melissa Dederer is a certified Information Governance Professional (IGP) and Certified Records Manager (CRM) with over 20 years in the information management and governance profession. She is a recognized thought leader with in-depth knowledge and expertise in translating complex processes into clear, understandable and actionable steps, developing clear and concise documentation, and is known for using process improvements, enabling technologies, project management, and training strengths to meet commitments with integrity.

    Melissa has been active in ARMA International for 20 years, at the chapter, region and international levels and, having recently served four years as a Director on ARMA International’s Board of Directors, is now serving as Vice President-Secretary and Immediate Past President on the Board of the Metropolitan New York City chapter.


     

    Timothy S. Driscoll is a Justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York. Elected to a fourteen-year term in November 2007, Judge Driscoll serves in the Nassau County Commercial Division. He is also the co-chairman of the Chief Administrative Judge’s working group on electronic discovery. He is a member of the Chief Judge’s Advisory Council on Commercial Litigation in New York State, and serves as co-chair of the Subcommittee on Alternative Dispute Resolution. In addition to his judicial responsibilities, Judge Driscoll is an adjunct professor at Brooklyn Law School and Nassau Community College, and a teaching team member at the Harvard Law School’s Trial Advocacy Workshop.

    Prior to beginning his term on January 1, 2008, Judge Driscoll held a number of posts in the public and private sector. He served as Deputy Nassau County Executive for Law Enforcement and Public Safety from July 2004 to December 2007. In that position, Judge Driscoll oversaw all of the public safety and law enforcement agencies in the County, including the Police, Fire Marshal, Probation, Sheriff, Office of Consumer Affairs, Traffic and Parking Violations Agency, Medical Examiner, and Office of Emergency Management.

    Judge Driscoll was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Eastern District of New York from November 2000 to July 2004. His case load included violent crime matters including racketeering, murder, gun possession and trafficking, and narcotics distribution, as well as white collar matters including mail fraud, wire fraud and health care fraud. His work as a federal prosecutor was recognized by the FBI, Nassau County Police Department, Old Brookville Police Department, and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

    As an Assistant District Attorney in Nassau County from September 1996 through November 2000, Judge Driscoll’s docket included cases involving burglary, robbery, narcotics and driving while intoxicated, as well as investigations into official corruption.

    Prior to beginning his service as a prosecutor, Judge Driscoll was associated with Williams & Connolly in Washington D.C. from November 1992 through July 1996. Before joining the law firm, Judge Driscoll served as a law clerk to the Honorable Joseph M. McLaughlin, United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

    Judge Driscoll is a graduate of Harvard Law School (cum laude 1991), Hofstra University (summa cum laude 1988) and Holy Trinity High School in Hicksville, which inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 2005. He is the Past President of the Irish Americans in Government of Nassau County, and the Past President of the Catholic Lawyers Guild of Nassau County.

     


     

    James C. Francis IV is a Distinguished Lecturer at the CUNY School of Law where, among other things, he teaches Electronic Discovery. A graduate of Yale College, Yale Law School, and the Kennedy School of Government, he served from 1985 until 2017 as a United States Magistrate Judge in the Southern District of New York.   In the field of electronic data and the law, Judge Francis is the author of numerous opinions, including Rowe Entertainment, Inc. v. William Morris Agency, 205 F.R.D. 421 (S.D.N.Y. 2002) (allocation of costs), Chen-Oster v. Goldman, Sachs & Co., 285 F.R.D. 294 (S.D.N.Y. 2012) (proportionality, sampling, and phased discovery), In re Warrant to Search a Certain E-Mail Account Controlled and Maintained by Microsoft Corp., 15 F. Supp. 3d 466 (S.D.N.Y. 2014) (extraterritorial reach of warrant for e-mail content), and Cat3, LLC v. Black Lineage, Inc., 164 F. Supp. 3d 488 (S.D.N.Y. 2016) (sanctions under amended Rule 37(e)).   Judge Francis speaks frequently on electronic discovery and is a member of the Judicial Advisory Committee of The Sedona Conference, the Advisory Committee of the Georgetown Advanced E-Discovery Institute, and the Advisory Board of the Cardozo Data Law Initiative.


     

    Deborah Freier has been an Assistant Prosecutor at the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office in Newark, New Jersey, for the past 15 years. She is currently assigned to the Office’s Special Victims Unit where she prosecutes crimes against children including sexual and physical abuse. Ms. Freier specializes in computer and technology facilitated crimes, including online child sexual exploitation. She has extensive experience using legal process to obtain data held by third-party service providers. Ms. Freier received her BA in Economics from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, and her MA in Criminal Justice from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice.  Prior to attending law school, Ms. Freier worked as an investigator for the New York City Department of Investigation.  She received her Juris Doctor from Seton Hall Law School in Newark, New Jersey, after which she served as a law clerk in the Superior Court of New Jersey, Criminal Division.


     

    As the Chief Executive Officer of ARMA International, Jocelyn Gunter blends the magic of data and the art of human relations to achieve the best possible outcomes for the membership, the industry, and the association itself.

    Gunter has over 10 years of experience in external audit, internal compliance, and strategic financial management. She has transitioned her experience as a CPA to Association Management leading ARMA in many operational areas including finance, sales, marketing and education. She is an IGP with a holistic perspective of managing information as an asset in every facet of an organization.

    Gunter, was formerly the Interim Chief Staff officer at ARMA International, and before that its Chief Financial Officer and is credited with refocusing the organization’s resources and efforts on the areas that best empower its membership and the industry. She brings to ARMA a new energy and passion that she hopes will ignite engagement from current and future members alike. She also serves as the President of Just Food, Inc. Board of Directors, a local food bank.


     

    Michael Haley joined Radian in 2014 after 10 years as a Senior Consultant with Cohasset Associates, following a career with Prudential Insurance. Michael develops cost-effective and practical solutions, demonstrating an ability to break down complex issues to effect simple solutions.

    Radian Group, Inc. – Refreshed, strengthened and streamlined the company-wide Records Management program including an update of the Retention Schedule. Automated retention controls have been implemented in Outlook and are being introduced on file shares.

    Cohasset Associates - Worked with clients to analyze their existing approach to managing active and inactive records. One project entailed the review of over 1.1 million boxes in 5 geographic locations. Operations were consolidated for efficiency and cost reduction.

    Prudential – Developed and implemented the enterprise records management program. Facing spoliation charges from a Federal judge, controls were developed and implemented; approximately 80,000 employees were trained within nine months.


     

    Ronald Hedges, JD is a member of Dentons' Litigation and Dispute Resolution practice group. He has extensive experience in e-discovery and in the management of complex litigation and has served as a special master, arbitrator and mediator. He also consults on management and discovery of electronically stored information (“ESI”).

    Mr. Hedges was a United States Magistrate Judge in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey from 1986 to 2007. While a magistrate judge, he was the Compliance Judge for the Court Mediation Program, a member of the Lawyers Advisory Committee, and both a member of, and reporter for, the Civil Justice Reform Act Advisory Committee. From 2001 to 2005 he was a member of the Advisory Group of Magistrate Judges.


     

    Richard Hogg is IBM's Global GDPR Evangelist.  He has 15+ years global experience across ECM, eDiscovery, Analytics and #infogov.

    He spent last 3 years working with heavily-regulated clients worldwide on their GDPR journey.  Jim is responsible for the cross-IBM GDPR capabilities, services and solutions.  He is also part of IBM’s Internal GDPR Readiness Program

    Jim is a frequent speaker annually on GDPR & InfoGov across AIIM, ARMA, MER, LegalTech, Insight, World of Watson, InfoGovCon, IAPP and IPBA.


     

    Melissa Koch is a business and technology lawyer with nearly two decades advising tech and tech-enabled companies across industries. Melissa is a former in-house counsel and brings a rare depth and breadth of strategic legal expertise.

    In her transactional practice, Melissa structures, drafts, and negotiates strategic alliances, joint venture transactions, collaboration agreements, licenses and technology transfers, distribution and supply arrangements, vendor and sales agreements, products and services agreements, SaaS and PaaS agreements, research and development collaborations, internet and e- commerce transactions, and other corporate operational transactions.

    Melissa works extensively with general and staff counsel providing coordination and support in for complex and general litigation, government and public affairs, communications, M&A activity, outsourcing, corporate and major financing transactions, procurement, antitrust, general compliance and reporting, and crisis management. Melissa counsels clients on privacy, data, and security matters, including GDPR readiness, as a member of Akerman’s Data Law Center.

    Melissa serves on the Business Advisory Board of Bridg, the Florida Bar Board of Governor’s Council on Technology, and is a Board Member and organizer of TEDxOrlando. Melissa has taught and mentored with Starter Studio and Blackstone Launchpad and is very active in the Orlando technology community.


     

    Anna Lebedeva, IGP, CIPM, PMP, is a Vice President of Records Management at People’s United Bank.  Her RIM accomplishments include establishing RIM programs from ground up, developing retention schedules, standing up legal hold processes, and working on electronic records strategies.  Anna has recently focused on regulatory compliance, information security, and privacy areas. In her previous years, Anna had extensive experience in software development and project management. 

    Anna has a Master’s of Science degree in Software Engineering from Fairfield University and a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Finance from University of Bridgeport. Anna has been active with ARMA International at the chapter and international levels.  She is a member of a small groups of subject matter experts selected by ARMA International to participate on IGP Certification Exam Writing Committee.  Anna serves as Vice President – CIO on the Board of the Metropolitan NYC chapter and as Vice President – Secretary on the Board of CT chapter.  She also serves on the University of Bridgeport Industry Advisory Board for the School of Engineering.  Anna holds an Information Governance Professional (IGP), Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM), and Project Management Professional (PMP) certifications.


     

    Rudolph Mayer, Jr., IGP, leads Information Governance and Data Rationalization efforts for PwC’s Chief Data Office. In his 20+ years experience, Rudy has focused on driving information governance change for organizations. In his role with PwC’s Chief Data Office, Rudy aligns executive stakeholders to deliver programmatic change in the way the organization utilizes and manages information and data. Rudy is a certified Information Governance Professional and a member of the Chicago ARMA chapter. He has facilitated education programs frequently at ARMA International and Chicago and Minneapolis ARMA Chapter events.


     

    Matt McClelland, Principal Consultant – Doculabs, is an information management professional with more than 16 years of experience in applying technology to improve the management of business content. He has particular expertise in file analytics and taxonomy, as well as records management, e-discovery and litigation research, and enterprise search.

    Before joining Doculabs, Matt spent 10 years in information management roles at Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, most recently as manager of the organization’s Information Governance Office, where he led initiatives in records management, e-discovery and litigation research, and enterprise search strategy, as well as file analytics and taxonomy.

    Matt is an Advisory Board member of the Information Governance Initiative (IGI), AIIM, and ARMA, and has presented at numerous industry conferences, including CIGO Summit and events sponsored by AIIM and KM World. He is an AIIM-certified Enterprise Content Management Master and an ARMA-certified Information Governance Professional.


     

    Supervisory Special Agent (SSA) Prashanth Mekala has been assigned to the FBI New York Field Office for over 13 years. He spent his first eight years working on complex counterintelligence cases.  He spent two years working in FBI Headquarters as a Program Manager in Counterintelligence Division’s Economic Espionage Unit and Cyber Division’s Middle East/Africa Unit. For the past three years, SSA Mekala has led two investigative teams focused on computer intrusions committed by sophisticated criminal groups, state sponsors, and international terrorist groups.

    SSA Mekala has an undergraduate engineering degree from Carnegie Mellon. He has a graduate degree from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). He recently graduated with distinction from Carnegie Mellon with a graduate degree in Information Technology.


     

    Jim Polka, Principal Consultant – Doculabs, is a business strategy professional with more than 12 years of experience in strategic planning, financial analysis, and business process analysis. He offers deep experience in project management, coordinating with client and team resources in Doculabs consulting engagements to help clients achieve their business objectives.

    In addition to InfoSec-based information management, Jim’s expertise includes technology selection and strategic planning and analysis, with particular knowledge of enterprise content management (ECM) technologies and requirements. He understands the challenges involved in ECM initiatives, including change management and the need for executive management support. He also has significant experience with IT operations—from requirements documentation and project management, to vendor management, roadmap development, user acceptance testing, and application development and quality. 


     

    Dr. William Saffady is an experienced records management and information governance consultant and researcher based in New York City.   He is the author of over three dozen books and many articles on records management, record retention, document storage and retrieval technologies, and other information management topics. His latest book, Record Retention Requirements: A Guide to 100 Commonly-Encountered Record Series, is published by ARMA International. Since 1976, Dr. Saffady has served as an information management consultant, providing analytical services and training, to corporations, government agencies, not-for-profit entities, cultural institutions, and other organizations.


     

    Rebecca Thorkildsen is a Global Director of Legal and Contract Management Solutions based out of Chicago. Rebecca brings over 20 years of experience in legal management and technology consulting to Pangea3’s clients. Rebecca serves as a strategic advisor to legal, operations and procurement teams considering alternative legal services as a means to achieve mission critical business objectives such as cost savings, efficiency improvements and legal resource optimization in delivery of legal services. She helps clients to identify appropriate work to be outsourced, improve upon current work processes, utilize technology to support operations and measure performance of new solutions.

    In her years at Pangea3, Rebecca has helped to develop and implement Thomson Reuters’ strategy around delivery of contract services, particularly through augmentation of technology and expansion of service offerings. The team has been working to add capabilities in contract analysis, template harmonization, automation/assembly, workflow management, process reporting, automated abstraction/due diligence and deviation analysis. The cornerstone of these new service offerings is contract risk management, a topic on which Rebecca often speaks and writes. As part of this approach, Rebecca recognizes that contracting is the front line in compliance risk management and has worked to align Pangea3’s risk and CLM services in areas such as third party risk management. She is a thought leader on use of contract data and analytics to support contracting functions.

    Prior to joining Pangea3, Rebecca worked as the head of HBR Consulting’s corporate legal technology services and co-delivered management consulting services including law department and technology reviews advising on topics such as structure/organization, legal resource optimization, cost containment and current/best practices in business process management and operations. Rebecca’s primary specialties include strategic technology planning, operational reviews, business process improvement, cost containment programs and system selections & implementations. Rebecca frequently spoke and wrote on key topics such as implementation of performance management programs and advised on the design of objective-focused performance metrics and reporting strategies. Rebecca has deep expertise in legal technology systems including matter management/eBilling, contract management and document management systems.

    Prior to joining HBR, Rebecca worked in Arthur Andersen’s Business Consulting Strategic Technology Group, where she helped to establish the Lotus Notes and Electronic Commerce practices.


     

     

    Serrin Turner is a partner at Latham & Watkins LLP, where he is a member of the firm’s Cybersecurity & Data Privacy Practice, White Collar Defense & Government Investigations Practice, and Complex Commercial Litigation Practice.  He regularly counsels clients with respect to cybersecurity preparedness and incident response, helping them to navigate a rapidly evolving regulatory and litigation landscape.  Mr. Turner joined Latham following six years as an Assistant US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, where he served as the Office’s lead cybercrime prosecutor. In that role, Mr. Turner handled a wide range of cybercrime investigations and prosecutions, including matters involving computer hacking, data breaches, black-market websites, trafficking in stolen payment card and personal identity information, and money laundering through digital currencies.  Among other notable cases, Mr. Turner led the prosecution of the owner and operator of the Silk Road website, a vast online black market for illegal drugs, malicious software, and other contraband, as well as the prosecution of the digital currency service Liberty Reserve and several of its principals, on charges of laundering billions of dollars in cybercrime proceeds.  Mr. Turner also handled high-profile data-privacy litigation at the US Attorney’s Office, including a leading email provider’s challenge to a search warrant for data stored overseas.
